Watching the curve

specifically USA vs Italy

“on 05/10 I was admitted to @mountsinainyc with worsening symtoms of #COVID.

This is the current “curve of the USA” as you can see there is no curve, it is just rising.

This is the current curve for Italy. As you can see they did achieve the much sought after curve but now in Oct another SPIKE

Nurses are badass, they are tackling this very dangerous and potentially lethal virus head on with all professionalism they possess and a lot of moxy.
Nurses be like

Embracing the mask. Emphasizing our eyebrows.
Embracing the mask as part of my wardrobe.

Since the onset of the virus, I have been fitted with N95’s secured a stockpile of disposable and reusable masks. The stylist in me has come to see it as an accessory. If you have peeked at my style page you will know I am all about comfort. With that in mind the mask has to be comfortable. I have also taken to emphasizing my eyebrows a little bit more. Not only is it fashionable these days, it gives your eyes more definition and expression as that is what people see.

As a nurse going into possible exposure areas I always wear a n95 under the reusable which makes it hard for people to hear me but at least we are keeping safe.

Be sure to wash your cloth masks daily and throw away the disposable ones properly. I see so many in parking lots and other disgusting places that will require someone else picking it up and throwing away.

Learn from history. The BLACK PLAGUE lasted as long as it did because of the filthy conditions people lived in and the rats that ran a muck.

Keep your head above water

Do you feel a bit overwhelmed. It is now October and we are no where near the end of this pandemic. Keep the faith. You will make it through. The picture above is a 1400 year old Ginkgo tree in China. It represents endurance, simplicity, flexibility, and strength, we all must adopt to survive. Go here to read my post on a 105 year old lady who survived the pandemic of 1918.

I have been comparing USA and Italy because Italy initially responded in much the same way as USA. Severely lagging in response time. Since then Italy has been a beacon of light in the battle with the virus, having a consistently low rate of new cases and deaths. Keep in mind the population of these two countries are grossly different. With the USA total population of 330,000,000 and Italy 66,000,000.
We all thought that with the onset of summer temperatures that this thing would move on….not the case in the US.

Here is a list of things that Italy did right after taking it seriously

  • Extensive testing: People with symptoms and people who were asymptomatic were tested whenever possible.
  • Proactive tracing: If somebody tested positive, everybody they live with was tested or, if tests weren’t available, they were required to self-quarantine.
  • Emphasis on home diagnosis and care: Health care providers would actually go to the homes of people with suspected Covid-19 cases to collect samples so they could be tested, keeping them from being exposed or exposing other people by visiting a hospital or doctor’s office.
  • Monitoring of medical personnel and other vulnerable workers: Doctors, nurses, caregivers at nursing homes, and even grocery store cashiers and pharmacists were monitored closely for possible infection and given ample protective gear to limit exposure.

At least in my state we are doing most of these, with the exception of home testing, we do have drive through testing.

I have visited Italy and one thing I know that is prevalent in every town and provence is churches. I believe that they are praying as well, which makes a huge difference in the outcome. Belief in a higher power can change body chemistry and produce positive outcomes.

The growing pandemic effect on human civilization, psychosocial impact!!

Social media contributes to psychosocial impact.

Human civilization probably is passing through the most critical juncture of this millennium while its existence is being challenged by the emergence of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus

Are you feeling short of breath, heaviness in your chest? Are you freakin out that you may have the virus, and how many people you may have infected or are you having a panic attack? As I sit here writing this post we are 6 months into the start of the virus and the USA is now at the top of the charts with new cases soaring. I am feeling short of breath, I have been home sick with none of the symptoms of covid 19, but am still afraid that I have some form of it and may have infected my family. I am a nurse. I am having a panic attack. That feeling of shortness of breath is a symptom of panic/anxiety/burnout. I am 2 days away from taking vacation and not feeling 100%. I am scheduled to have “the test” today to alleviate my fears and that of my employer. My coworker was out last week with similar symptoms. Tested negative now back to work.

The disease itself multiplied by forced quarantine to combat COVID-19 applied by nationwide lockdowns can produce acute panic, anxiety, obsessive behaviors, hoarding, paranoia, and depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the long run.

The virus is having severe effects on human civilization. In my own city, there have been multiple drownings in the river that runs through it. People are ignoring social distancing and seeking outdoor activities that have dire consequences. Swimming in a river is never safe. A river like the ocean and the mountains are living entities. The utmost respect must be given to their ever changing nature and power. The river has a current, and whirlpools that run in deep pockets. No swimmer is safe no matter how strong or skilled. The ocean also has undertows, like a river running beneath it that can pull the strongest of swimmers down.

So it is with this virus, if we do not respect it and take all precautions and ignore the stupidity of others who are not taking precautions, we will not survive. That would include social media hype and misinformation. Stick to the medical guidelines. We as medical professionals are seeing this thing take lives. Masks do help, wear one!

Herd Immunity! Is it possible?

Is herd immunity possible?

My own daughter is believing that herd immunity is going to happen. I am encouraging her to stick with wearing a mask until the curve begins to happen instead.

“We don’t have a good way to safely build it up, to be honest, not in the short term,” said Michael Mina, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. “Unless we’re going to let the virus run rampant again — but I think society has decided that is not an approach available to us.”

In order for herd immunity to exist it needs to be at least 60% of population and as you can see that is not happening.

Put your own oxygen mask on first….self care!

If you feel “burnout” setting in , if you feel demoralized and exhausted it is best for the sake of everyone to withdraw and restore yourself. Dalai Lama

NO OTHER INFLUENZA HAS BEEN DEEMED PANDEMIC SINCE 1918 WHEN 1% OF THE WORLD POPULATION DIED. Please do not be in a hurry to get back to normal. Normal may never be the same. Below is an example of the worst misuse of power and authority to mislead a nation to untimely deaths.

A nurses protocol for keeping their families safe

wear a mask and gloves

Wear a Mask

This includes going to store, getting gas, etc…In China it is etiquette to wear a mask and if you don’t it is considered rude.

Stay home if you can/Wash your hands

There has been a lot of criticism for people who are wearing gloves at the store. I totally see why they are, to protect themselves. They would be cross contaminating with or without them but perhaps not pick up anything if they took gloves off and disposed of them before leaving the store. It really doesn’t matter because as nurses we are trained to wash our hands after we take our gloves off anyway. Also this virus has a lipid shell, which is best destroyed by good old soap and water.I say people at the stores nix the gloves because guess what you are not being responsible with them and they are scattered throughout the parking lots now which is gross and will cause more spread of disease.

If you have read much of this blog you know that I am also into natural healing methods, like essential oils and aromatherapy. By chance many years ago I stumbled upon a natural immune booster that I swear by and have all my family taking it with the onset of this pandemic.

Myrrh capsules

I began taking Myrrh capsules many years ago, because I thought I might have an ulcer . I took it for 2 consecutive years. I no longer had the gut pain and I never got sick after that. Maybe a 24 hour body ache thing but I was never down for days or weeks like my co-workers or even my children. It was a “light bulb” moment when I finally put the 2 together. Being a labor and delivery nurse and a mother of 3, I know the importance of breastfeeding to pass on natural immune boosters to your newborns. The wisemen also knew that Myrrh had immune boosting properties and wanted to make sure Jesus was well protected as a baby to fulfill his mission on earth. It was one of the gifts they brought to the baby Jesus. You can get it online at AMAZON Natures Way.

Also another one I stumbled upon while trying to get rid of the toenail fungus I acquired after having a pedicure last summer. It not only made my toenails soft again, but adds to the immune boosters. You can get it at iherb here

I am convinced that Cayenne can burn out any cold symptom. I have always turned to hot and spice broth when I had the first onset of cold symptoms. Helps clear the sinuses and gives a general feeling of warmth. Turns out it has healing properties good for helping defeat cancer, capsaicin in cayenne peppers has metabolism-boosting properties. It helps increase amount of heat your body produces, making you burn more calories per day It does this through a process called diet-induced thermogenesis. It is been suggested that cayenne pepper may have antibacterial properties. In laboratory tests, scientists found that it combats group A Streptococci, the type of bacteria responsible for strep throat and other diseases.

Sage and Garlic

Sage has a particularly high content of antioxidant rosmarinic acid, which fights fungus, bacteria, and viruses. Research has shown sage to be one of the most powerful natural antimicrobials. It has been tested and proven to efficiently fight more than 40 common strands of bacteria and more than 25 strands of fungus. Garlic is arguably one of the most well-known immunity boosters. Specifically, compounds found in garlic have been shown to boost the function of our disease-fighting white blood cells, helping to ward off viruses we may come in contact with
