That’s right you read it correctly. The United States population  has the worlds most expensive pee!

30 years ago I agreed whole heartedly with that statement and also believed that I could get enough of the vitamins and minerals I needed from the food I ate. Coming from a Mediterranean background, fresh veggies and fruit as well as fish and all homemade food was a staple in my diet. I continued to eat this way into my adulthood, with the exception of a five year experiment with being a vegetarian.

However as a baby boomer, I need to ask you this question. What do we have now that we didn’t have 60 or even for our parents 80 years ago?

The answer is pollution, GMO, Internet, sedentary lifestyles, and increased stress. These things have changed our world in a bad way. As you probably know free radicals are uncharged molecules that are  naturally occurring in our bodies.

Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. Sometimes the body’s immune system’s cells purposefully create them to neutralize viruses and bacteria. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, cigarette smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals, which is bad and why our world is so much different from that in our younger days or our parents.

Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are unavailable, or if the free-radical production becomes excessive, damage can occur. Of particular importance is that free radical damage accumulates with age. Heart disease and cancer are just two of the culprits the arise out of free radical damage.

The point is that because those environmental f actors were not present when I was a kid or when my parents were kids, the foods we ate were probably adequate to neutralize the free radicals that we came up against. ( Although I do remember eating WonderBread which back then was probably not made from genetically modified wheat.)

One of the best ways to counteract the overload of FREE RADICALS is to neutralize them with antioxidants. *(the free radicals cause oxidation and renders a cell rancid or rusty) One cannot possibly eat enough of the foods high in antioxidants to fight off the effects of our environment so I have changed my tune and I TAKE SUPPLEMENTS.  Yes it is somewhat true that much of what we ingest in these supplements is eliminated in our pee, but not all of it and if we can boost, our immunity and our fire power against FREE RADICALS just a little bit, by taking vitamin supplements I say DO IT!!

So how do you determine which is the correct amount and correct combination of vitamins and minerals to take?

We all know that vitamin E and vitamin C are the lead runners in the antioxidant race to neutralize FREE RADICALS.  But it is important to note the importance of a good combination of all the micronutrients especially the Vitamin B complex.

There are countless nutrition sites on the internet as well as books written on the subject. I suggest doing your own research and also if you have any medical conditions always check with your physician. In the meantime get a high quality multivitamin and start taking it. (I recommend STOPAGINGNOW.COM)  Listen to your body. If you find you have any adverse symptoms stop taking them.

Of course you can try eliminating as many of the environmental factors you can. Not always feasible however…If you smoke, that is a no brainer, (I can’t believe anyone smokes anymore) STOP NOW! Create a stress free zone in your home and your workplace, eat all the foods high in antioxidants and get fresh air as much as possible. AND  Always always keep doing your 3 minute workout. The benefits of this type of exercise far out weigh any excuse you might have for not doing them.
